Few films in recent memory have made an impact quite like Celine Song’s Past Lives – a moving portrait of memory and identity, exploring how we learn about ourselves through relationships with others.
Born in South Korea, Song studied at Queen’s University in Ontario before studying play writing at Columbia University in New York and dabbling in TV writing before diving headfirst into her debut feature. The filmmaker has always been keenly attuned to the ebbs and flows of life split between cultures, a constant search for yourself in a world fractured and confusing beyond understanding.
That’s why Past Lives hits so hard: it’s not just a personal, vulnerable portrait announcing the arrival of a major filmmaker, but the film deals in the kind of empathetic storytelling that hits right in the gut. Now, you can wear her name across your chest, hoping for in-yun with whoever notices.
