In just a few years, Payal Kapadia has emerged as a distinctive voice in contemporary cinema, blending documentary and fiction to create deeply personal and evocative works. Her first feature A Night of Knowing Nothing, a poetic and immersive exploration of the 2015 student strikes and caste differences at the Film and Television Institute of India, won the prestigious Oeil d'or (Golden Eye) award for Best Documentary at Cannes Film Festival in 2021.
Her latest film All We Imagine As Light was also awarded the Grand Prix at Cannes earlier this year, further cementing Kapadia’s reputation as a visionary storyteller. Beautifully shot and characteristic in its leitmotif of dreams, it follows three nurses living and working in Mumbai, their overlapping narratives of love and loss and finding hope and connection in the light when one is surrounded by darkness.
